FAQ Panties
How much fluid can Femi.Eko® period underwear hold?
The range of Femi.Eko® menstrual panties is wide and covers various absorption needs. Some of our collections (FRIDA, FREJA, SMILLA) can hold up to 5 normal tampons (45 ml), while the Luna collection holds up to 10 normal tampons (100 ml). Most of our menstrual underwear have moderate absorption (IDA, SANNE, SILKE, FLORA), which is ideal for up to 8 hours of protection, although you can wear the underwear for up to 12 hours depending on your menstrual flow (however, doctors do not recommend this amount of time, as it is best to maintain safe hygiene). The difference in protection is in the absorption layers, which can be thicker or have fewer layers (like our Light Absorption from Ella Collection), and also in the absorption area, which can take up half or all of the back of the underwear.
You can check out our Absorption Level Chart, which gives you approximate information on how much our levels can absorb compared to other period products. The duration of use may depend on menstrual volume or needs.
How is the period underwear made?
Femi.Eko® period underwear is a normal underwear, but it has 4 layers in the middle area.
The top layer that comes in contact with your genitals is made of organic cotton or our patented technology with hemp fabric, all without chemicals or pesticides to be safe for your reproductive system.
The middle layers provide efficient absorption and the last layer is waterproof to block fluids.
The main fabric of the underwear depends on the model and style and is always carefully selected to be soft, comfortable and breathable.
The layers are not felt when worn, so you can go about your normal activities stress-free. You will not feel the difference between normal and menstrual underwear and you will just forget that you have your period.
Why hemp period underwear is healthy and sustainable?
Our patented technology is based on protective layers of absorption consisting of hemp yarn in combination with organic cotton and other natural fabrics. Why hemp? Because it is good for the body and good for the planet. Hemp is the most sustainable material, from production to wear: it restructures the soil, is CO2 negative and does not require as much water to grow, has short growing times – only 3 months – and does not require pesticides or other chemical processes for cultivation and production. When worn has numerous properties that benefit the intimate balance: it is absorbent, antibacterial, hypoallergenic, moisture regulating, anti-odor, thermoregulating, breathable, durable, chemical-free, biodegradable and sustainable, and is also referred to as “vegan wool.” The market for the production of hemp textiles is growing considerably every year and, according to statistics, is becoming one of the most important materials of the future (with a significant growth of 37.9% CAGR until 2027*). Major fashion brands are already producing hemp textiles and marketing them as “sustainable” and part of the “green” brand movement.
Will period underwear leak?
Period underwear is highly absorbent thanks to the innovative fabric layers. Our menstrual underwear has a waterproof bottom for extra protection (PUL). Of course, just like disposable pads, you will need to replace it before it is completely saturated with fluid. After wearing period underwear for a while, you’ll know when it’s time to change it.
Even though menstrual underwear is not made to leak, you may find that a small area becomes oversaturated (in a short time) or that the side seams leak. In this case, contact us and describe the problem so that we can advise you further. If it is a manufacturing defect, we will gladly exchange your product within 90 days of purchase.
ExtraTip! If you are on the road and cannot change as planned, you can soak up the excess liquid with a piece of toilet paper. This will give you peace of mind that your period underwear will not get too soaked.
How do I find the right size for me?
You may want to check our size chart. Our measurements are designed for a regular fit, so please choose the right size for you, and if you are between measures or you like a loose fit go for a size bigger. Please check the individual waist size for each model, and also pay attention to the elasticity of the fabric if you are between sizes. Otherwise, you can benefit from our SATISFACTION GUARANTEE program.
Can I just wear period underwear, without extra protection?
It all depends on your period and what absorbency is best for you and when. Menstrual underwear can be a complete replacement for disposable products (pads or tampons), but it can also work in combination with those. It is even better for you and the environment if you use menstrual underwear together with a Femi.Eko® menstrual cup, period disc or cloth pad.
Is period underwear comfortable?
It is not only comfortable, but also feels like normal underwear.
The breathability of the fabric protects against the development of bacteria, so you will experience less odor and vaginal dryness. Some users say that the breathability eliminates the feeling of fussing and having bulky panties that they usually have with classic products.
In addition, the elimination of the plastic that is common with regular pads helps keep body temperature down, resulting in more comfort and much more confidence.
A very breathable fabric that comes in contact with your most intimate parts prevents itching and irritation. The underwear stays dry for hours while absorbing blood super fast, so it can even dry during the day.You can now enjoy freedom of movement.
Do period underwear shorten your period?
There is no study on this topic yet, but many women who have worn menstrual underwear believe that using them can shorten your period. Unlike tampons, which can soak up menstrual blood and block its natural flow, period underwear allows blood to flow as it should, at its normal rate. This could be why some women find that their periods are shorter when they wear period underwear. The fact that the underwear is so comfortable will no longer make you count how long you have to bleed, you can just enjoy your body and its wonders.
Is period underwear suitable for heavy period flows?
Yes, our menstrual underwear can actually be extremely absorbent and hold up to 10 tampons of fluid, which is equivalent to 100 ml of blood, such as our LUNA collection. It can be worn for particularly heavy menstruation, at night, after childbirth, after surgery or abortion. For heavy menstrual bleeding, we also recommend all other collections, which are equipped with an extended absorbent area on the back of the underwear.
Our menstrual underwear is designed to protect you in all important places (including the back of the underwear!), so you feel safe during the day or night.
Will the period underwear smell?
No, Femi.Eko® period underwear usually stays fresher than other intimate products. This is because the fabric is breathable and most of the liquid stays in the inner layers. This helps prevent the growth of bacteria that usually create unpleasant odors.
To avoid odors, rinse the underwear well after use before washing and make a sanitisation each 3-4 months, by washing your garments at 60 degrees, even though normally we recommend washing it at 40 degrees. Also, do not use perfumed detergents, which can cause over-saturation of the layers with perfume. It is also important to dry your period underwear in the fresh air and let them dry completely.
Please do not add fabric softener or perfume when washing your period underwear, as this can destroy the protective layers and unbalance your vaginal flora.
If you notice strange odors, you should check the problem with your doctor and eliminate undetected infections.
Are period panties suitable for the womens who suffer from endometriosis or adenomyosis?
Yes, they are. Many women who suffer from this condition do not feel comfortable inserting tampons or menstrual cups into their bodies, but period panties are soft and easy to use. Besides, they are a better choice to let the menstrual flow naturally, which can ease the period days and discomfort. The breathability of the fabric protects against the development of bacteria, so you may notice less odor, vaginal dryness or irritation. Some users say that the breathability eliminates the feeling of restlessness and bulky panties that they usually have with classic pads, resulting in more comfort and much more confidence.
How much money can I expect to save by switching to period underwear?
Women bleed about 35 years of their lifetime. Yes, that’s a lot!Â
Switching to period underwear and sustainable intimate products, such as menstrual cups or period panties, will help you save up to 4.000 euro or more (depending where you live and how much you pay for menstrual products).
Don’t believe it? Let’s do the maths:Â
Â
DISPOSABLE PADS over a lifetime:
35 years x 12 periods yearly x 5 days average = 2100 days of period= 5 years and 8 months of continuous period days – Crazy right?Â
5 disposable pads/ day x 2100 days= 10500 disposable pads
0.6 EUR/ pad x 10500 disposable pads = 6300 EUR / IN A LIFETIME spent on disposable pads
Â
FEMI.EKO® ’S PERIOD UNDERWEAR
Â
Let’s say you buy 5 period underwear each 2 years. In 35 YEARS you should change the period underwear for about 17 times.
17 x 5 = 85 period underwear in a lifetime
22 EUR x 85 period underwear = 1870 EUR/ IN A LIFETIME spent on period underwear
How many pairs of period underwear will I need?
It depends on how heavy your menstrual period is, whether you use a menstrual cup or alternate another type of protection method. Usually, women have between 5 and 10 pairs of period underwear. A simple answer is to calculate how many disposable period pads you used during your period and divide that by 3.
You will need at least 3 pairs of period underwear to start with and change them during the drying process. You may need to wash and get the pairs ready right away.
You can opt for different absorbency levels for your period underwear to cover each type of flow and each day of your period accordingly.
Remember that period underwear can be worn for up to 2 years and even longer, depending on how careful you are when washing them.
How long can I wear the same period underwear?
If you have normal menstrual flow, you need to change your menstrual underwear about 2 times, but if you have heavy menstrual flow, you can change it 3 times in 24 hours. Normally, you should not keep the underwear for more than 12 hours because it is not hygienically safe.
Can teenagers use period underwear?
They certainly can. Sustainable education should start early, and we recommend teens start choosing eco-friendly products at an early age that will change their lives for the better while protecting our planet. Starting early with period underwear can help young girls and teens feel in control of their cycle without spending a fortune on products that end up in landfills. They also feel more confident, less stressed about changing pads or being judged in different life situations, and can free themselves from the prejudice of being ashamed of their periods.
Can I use period underwear for incontinence, postpartum, after surgery or abortion?
Period underwear is a perfect product for mild incontinence. People with this problem need daily protection. While disposable pads can increase the risk of yeast and bacterial infections or cause irritation and chafing, Femi.Eko® period underwear is a true blessing for people who need to wear daily protection because of its comfort and breathability.
For postpartum, many women choose Femi.Eko® because it is a natural choice that promotes comfort and healing after childbirth, as it is more skin-friendly for the intimate area, and the added protection for the back gives extra security and confidence to enjoy the best moments of their lives without having to deal with periods struggles.
After surgery or an abortion, menstrual underwear can alleviate this feeling while providing more freedom of movement and comfort.
Any stress associated with leaks will be changed forever. You have our promise on that!
Can I use period underwear every day instead of regular underwear?
Yes, you can. Period underwear is also suitable for heavy discharge, pubic sweating and urinary incontinence and feels the same as regular underwear.
If you normally use pads daily, choose our absorbent medium or light flow underwear. They will safely replace your dependence on disposable liners and prevent extra waste from going to landfills.
Our specially designed Ella string collection is a favorite when it comes to daily comfort, protection and stress-free living.
How do I deal with changing my underwear when I’m away from home?
During your period, you should have extra period underwear and a small bag to store used underwear. For a more environmentally friendly solution, you can choose Femiekos wet bag solution for period underwear instead of plastic bags. This can be used to store your period underwear and is the perfect companion in case your period comes as a surprise. If you do not need to change your underwear in a public restroom, we recommend having a reusable liner with you for extra protection.
Also check out our ULLA collection, which has hooks on the side so you can easily change on the go without having to undress.
How long can period underwear last?
The lifespan of period underwear can vary greatly depending on how it is cared for, how often it is used, or whether it is used with other products or on its own. Generally they last 2 to 5 years, but we recommend replacing them after 2 years as the protective layer can wear off with use and washing.
To take care of your underwear carefully, rinse them well in cold water and then wash them carefully at 40 degrees (hand washing is recommended for long life), and even sanitize it from time to time at 60 degrees.
How do I wash period underwear?
Blood stains fabric easily, and you should always remember to use cold water first when washing a reusable period underwear or blood stain anywhere.
Rinse the period underwear in a bowl of cold water before washing, or you can run the cold water on the blood stain (though this is not really sustainable) while rubbing it with your hands (especially if there is dried blood on the period underwear). Keep rubbing the stain in cold water, several times if necessary, until the water runs clear. Do not soak the underwear in cold water for more than 15 minutes.
Then wash them normally in the washing machine or by hand at 40 degrees Celsius.
If you choose to wash period underwear by hand, rub it with warm water and special underwear detergent or detergent without perfume, and then simply rinse it in cold water until the water runs clear.
We recommend that you do not use fabric softeners, as they can affect the absorbency of the fabrics. It is also not recommended to bleach period underwear as this can degrade the material and affect absorbency, but can also be transferred to your skin and affect vaginal flora.
We do not recommend tumble dryers if you plan to use it for more than 2 years, as the absorbency and waterproof layers can be destroyed. But we do recommend from each few months to sanitize your underwear, by washing it at 60 degrees, in order to avoid bacterial growth.Â
Sunlight and drying in fresh air can kill remaining bacteria and fade stains, but it can also act like a bleach and fade colors. Be careful, however, as the waterproof base materials can be damaged if exposed to the sun or high heat for long periods of time (this also applies to drying underwear on the radiator).
Do not iron! Do not use perfume or other harmful chemicals!
Wash period underwear in a laundry bag for better care.
I spend a lot of time sitting on my chair in my classroom and at my office, is there a risk of leakage?
Even though Femi.Eko® period underwear is of good quality and provides full protection, we cannot guarantee incidents.
It all depends on how heavy your period is or if you have blood stasis, which is usually a risk. If you have a plentiful day, we recommend using an extra menstrual cup, which will certainly give you the security you need. The best way to test its receptivity is to wear it at home for the first time.
Can I wear my period underwear while I do exercises?
Yes, you can, and it’s even healthier, because women are advised not to use tampons at night, but to let their periods flow naturally.
When you experience the true potential of menstrual underwear, your idea of what nights can be like during menstruation will change.
We have specially designed Luna menstrual shorts for nighttime use, which have the highest absorption capacity (up to 100 ml) and a full absorption area on the back.
