Chemicals in tampons

A recent study conducted by researchers at UC Berkeley has revealed the presence of toxic metals such as arsenic, cadmium and lead in various brands of sanitary napkins. These findings underscore the need for safer choices for menstrual hygiene. Femi.Eko® is here for you with reusable menstrual products, made from natural materials to give you comfort and safety every day.

According to current rules in the European Union, manufacturers of tampons and pads are not required to disclose specific ingredients on their labels. Although there are strict environmental and safety criteria to obtain the EU Ecolabel, these do not include the requirement to list all ingredients on the packaging.
"I really hope that manufacturers will be required to test their products for metals, especially for toxic metals. It would be interesting to see how the public will demand this or demand better labeling of tampons and other menstrual products," said Shearston, the researcher and the author of the study, and emphasized the importance of safeguards and transparency for the health of all women.

The Toxic Metals and their Impact on Health

Why should you worry? The skin in the vagina has a high absorption potential, much higher than the skin on other parts of the body.

Since 50-80% of women use pads and tampons for several hours each month, exposure to these substances becomes a significant risk. Here's how they can affect you:

  • Infertility : Toxic metals can disrupt the endocrine systems, affect fertility and increase the risk of infertility.
  • Diabetes : Studies show a link between exposure to heavy metals such as cadmium and arsenic and the development of type 2 diabetes.
  • Cancer : Arsenic increases the risk of cancer, especially in the skin, lungs and bladder.
  • Cardiovascular disease : Metals can contribute to the development of cardiovascular diseases, including hypertension and atherosclerosis.
  • Endocrine disruption : Toxic metals can disrupt the normal functioning of the endocrine system, leading to hormonal imbalances.
  • Dementia : Long-term exposure to lead can seriously affect cognitive functions and lead to the development of dementia.

Kathrin Schilling, co-author of the study, said: "Although toxic metals are ubiquitous and we are exposed to low levels at all times, our study clearly shows that metals are also present in menstrual products and women may be at greater risk by using these products."
