Real experiences with the menstrual disc

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What you want to know before using it for the first time.

What is the difference between a disc and a menstrual cup?

Both collect menstrual blood. The disc sits beneath the cervix, with the front rim behind the pubic bone. The cup is positioned differently in the vagina and creates a vacuum that has to be broken when it is removed. The disc does not rely on this vacuum effect.

How do I know if Universal is right for me?

The model has a diameter of 68.35 mm. The fit depends on anatomy, placement and comfort – not on underwear size, age or whether you have given birth. If you feel uncomfortable pressure or pain, remove the disc and read the instructions before trying again.

How long can I keep it in, and when should it be emptied?

It can be worn for up to 12 hours according to the model's instructions. Empty it more often if your flow requires it. The first few times, check more often to find the rhythm that suits you; a 50 ml capacity does not guarantee 12 hours with every flow.

What do I do if it leaks?

Check that the cup sits beneath the cervix and that the front rim sits behind the pubic bone. Leaks can also happen when the disc needs emptying. Empty it, clean it and position it again according to the instructions. If the problem continues, the model may not suit your anatomy.

How do I remove it?

Wash your hands, find a comfortable position and relax your muscles. Take hold of the removal ring and pull the disc out slowly, as level as possible. Don't pull abruptly, and don't use objects to get it out. If you can't get it out or it hurts, seek medical help.

When and how do I sterilise the Universal disc?

Sterilise it before first use and between periods. Boil it for 5 minutes according to the product instructions, and let it cool before use. Each time you empty it, rinse it and wash it with warm water and a mild, fragrance-free soap; rinse thoroughly before inserting it again.

How do I store it, and when should it be replaced?

After cleaning and sterilising, the disc should dry completely and be stored in the cotton pouch provided, in a clean place. Check it before each use and replace it if you see cracks, tears or other damage. Its lifespan depends on care and the condition of the material.

Can I use the disc if I have an IUD?

Talk to your gynaecologist before use, especially if the IUD was fitted recently. The disc does not work by suction, but you should avoid catching or pulling the IUD strings when you remove it.

Can I use it for swimming, sport or at night?

Yes, when it is positioned correctly and you feel comfortable. Adjust how often you empty it to your flow, and stick to the maximum wear time in the instructions, including while you sleep.

Can I keep it in during sex?

It can stay in during vaginal intercourse if it is positioned correctly and you both feel comfortable. Stop if it feels uncomfortable. The disc is not a contraceptive and does not protect against sexually transmitted infections.
